I thoroughly enjoy your Substack. And thus am not surprised an editor enjoyed your writing enough to offer you an R&R! Congrats again, I'm cheering you on hard!

This ode to book clubs made me miss mine of 9 years that disbanded. They are a special kind of socializing.

Lastly, I might steal the term "house wine books" Enough said. 😎

Oh no! Heartbreaking about the book club :( I still miss my finance-y one... they are such great microcosms of community.

DEFINITELY STEAL IT! We should make house wine books a real thing.

And lastly, thank you so so much for your support and encouragement. Substack has been incredible for building a writing community (like you!) and I'm deeply grateful.

So happy to hear about your book… being that I am currently in the book reading phase of reading the Bible and devotional books right now I will keep you and your book in my prayers. Imagine the book club we had with all the WB girls.. let’s just say it was 5 minute discussion, most never finished the book.. we eventually discovered it was a wine and appetizer club with just a whole lot of lady talk and laughter… Covid killed it. We tried to zoom, but you know us all we talk over each other!!! I need a new club. I love that you did the coed old folks that’s awesome.

Thank you so much! I actually joined a spiritual book club (didn't make the essay in regards to time I joined) but it's been great and the community of women is fantastic for creating a safe place to ask questions and explore my own beliefs. love that you are doing something similar!

With the WB girls - I can only imagine the madness that ensued. Zoom book clubs are SO hard.

I want to join book club #3! If I knew you were an erudite neighbor writing inhale-able books, I would have made the invite sooner AND brought over chocolate chip cookies. Love you B!

"The sheer fact she sees how amazing Susie Sweetheart can be is huge! The fact she called it well-written and laugh-out-loud funny? Could I want anything more? NO!"

yes, yes, yes!!! And "interesting" is a COMPLIMENT. I would rather be interesting than unremarkable.

PS you forgot to list a book club ;)

hahha i thought telling people we read aloud would make us look culty 🤣

so re interesting - I feel like people use it as such a catchall phrase now that it's lost some of it's meaning and oomph. If someone says, "oh interesting" my first thought is that it certainly wasn't.

Congratulations on the R&R! I’ve always been curious about these online pitch events.

I spent so much time hoping to find a book club and eventually just started one a couple of years ago, gathering interested friends whose only connection to each other was the fact that they knew me. I feel like there are always speed bumps with book clubs—people who bail, don’t read the book, group gets too big, too small, disagreements over what to read… but like any slightly dysfunctional family, I wouldn’t trade the opportunity to gather, eat, drink and talk about books.

As for what I’m reading now, I just finished Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley (which I really enjoyed!) and am starting Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane (which has been on my TBR forever).

thank you so so much! i'd be happy to chat about the pitch events. this was my first on bluesky and I honestly stumbled across it randomly... i wish there was a easier way to find out about these things.

i hear you on the speedbumps! One of mine right now people bail all the time and then it'll be just 3 of us but it always winds up being such a lovely conversation.

I just looked up Cult Classic and that sounds PHENOMENAL. instant add to the TBR

Did I skip all the way down to the writing update first? Yes.

Love to hear the good news this week, BB! You deserve it.

And nothing wrong with a lil bit of escapism in books. Entertainment is entertainment.

I love your description of the book clubs you’ve been in. And the comparison of booktok books to table wine is spot on. Books have always been my refuge as well and I am always hoping to find a book club with the right balance of quality and quantity of people. Too many and the discussion branches out distracted. Too few and it devolves into just drinking and eating. Which is okay but not the purpose of a book club, IMHO.
